Saint John's performs more than 12,000 mammograms each year and is a leader in breast cancer research and treatment. A mammogram is an X-ray that creates an image of the breast on film. The mammography department at Saint John's has recently doubled in size, adding state-of-the-art equipment and was refurbished to bring a more comfortable atmosphere to the office.
Along with providing screening and diagnostic mammography services, the radiologists can perform biopsies when indicated. The core needle biopsy provides a minimally invasive method of obtaining a breast biopsy diagnosis while helping to keep many women out of the operating room.
Early detection and treatment of breast cancer gives patients a chance of survival better than 90 percent. Women over 40 should see their physician for a mammogram once a year.
