Blood Donor Guidelines

YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO DONATE BLOOD IF YOU:

Are in good health and feel well today.

  • Are 16 years of age or older (written parental consent required until 17th birthday).
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs.
  • Have not donated whole blood in the past 56 days.
  • Have not been to the dentist in the past 72 hours. 

YOU MAY NOT DONATE BLOOD IF YOU:

  • Have a history of hepatitis or AIDS.
  • Have traveled to a malarial area of the world in the past 12 months.
  • Have lived in the U.K. for 3 months cumulatively from 1980 – 1996.
  • Have spent time in Europe that adds up to 5 years cumulatively (1980 - present).
  • Have had a tattoo applied, body parts pierced (excluding ear piercing), or an accidental needle stick in the past 12 months.
  • Have a history of cancer, with the exception of basal and squamous cell skin cancer.
  • Have used cocaine in the past 12 months.
  • Have had a positive test for syphilis in the past 12 months.
  • (for men) Have had sex with another man, even once, since 1977.
  • Have used a needle to take drugs not prescribed by a doctor.
  • Have taken money or drugs for sex since 1977.
  • Have given anyone money or drugs to have sex with you in the past 12 months.
  • Have had sex with anyone in the past 12 months who has:
    • used a needle to take drugs not prescribed by a doctor.
    • taken money or drugs for sex.
  • Have taken the following medications:
  • Proscar (prostate gland enlargement) – 1 month deferral
  • Propecia (baldness) – 1 month deferral
  • Accutane (severe acne) – 1 month deferral
  • Avodart (prostate enlargement) – 6 month deferral
  • Soriatane (severe psoriasis) – 3 year deferral
  • Tegison (severe psoriasis) – indefinite deferral
