Gift of Retirement Plan Assets
Current income, estate and excise taxes substantially diminish retirement plan assets when distributed after the lifetime of the owner. The heirs receive only a fraction of the value of a retirement plan after payment of the taxes. By contrast, by naming Saint John's foundation as a beneficiary of the retirement plan, no income tax is paid on the gift - making the retirement plan asset an attractive charitable gift opportunity in a comprehensive estate plan.

Charitable Remainder Unitrust
Charitable Remainder Unitrust provides for an annual payment stated as a fixed percentage - at least 5 percent - of the fair market value of the trust assets as valued on an annual basis. The donor selects the amount of the fixed percentage at the time he/she establishes the unitrust. The percentage does not change, but the fair market value of the irrevocable trust may vary from year to year.
After the lifetime of the last surviving beneficiary or at the end of the specified term, the trust terminates and the trust principal or "remainder" interest is then distributed to Saint John's Health Center Foundation for the purpose as designated by the donor.
The Charitable Remainder Unitrust is an attractive option in estate planning. Other trust options that support Saint John's may be appropriate for you, so please call the Foundation or consult your tax advisor. For additional information, please contact Andrew Trilling, Director of Planned Giving 310-829-8958 to discuss your plan to make an estate gift.
