Education Program

Inspired by Flora L. Thornton's dedication to education as an essential component to wellness, and a generous grant from the Flora L. Thornton Foundation, Saint John's Health Center offers a variety of health education and support programs to the community to promote health and longevity.
Free Community Education Forums
Panels of prominent physicians and healthcare professionals present such topics as heart health, nutrition, cancer prevention and awareness, arthritis, stroke education, and women's health.

Freedom from Smoking
This 8-session, behavior modification, education and support program, developed by the American Lung Association, is led by a facilitator trained in smoking cessation intervention. With its step-by-step comprehensive plan for quitting smoking, this program provides the skills, self-understanding and support needed to quit. Sessions are held twice a week for 4 weeks. The fee for the program is $80.00 and includes all course material.

Lose Weight for Good
This 13-session group weight management course features weekly education and support focusedon aspects of lifestyle, exercise, attitudes, relationships and nutrition. It is facilitated by a registered dietitian experienced in weight management intervention. The fee for the program is $300.00 per 13-week program and includes all course material. Diabetes Management Series
A multidisciplinary healthcare team including a certified diabetes educator provides the latest information on how to manage diabetes and reduce incidence of complications. The fee for this 3-session group education program is $50.00. Please call (310)829-8453 for further information.
Diabetes Support Group
This group is specifically designed for Type 1, insulin dependent diabetics and diabetics using an insulin pump and is open to patients, their family members and caregivers. There is no fee for this support group.. Please call Sandy Andrews at (310) 829-8077 for schedule.
Individualized Nutrition & Diabetes Counseling
A Registered Dietitian/ Certified Diabetes Educator (RD,CDE) is available to provide individualized counseling for wellness and most medical conditions, including diabetes, to patients and their families for a fee.
