Mental Health Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People

Saint John's Child and Family Development Center's Mental Health Services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People is a county-wide program which has been providing outpatient treatment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities since 1976. The staff of the Deaf Services program is comprised of mental health professionals who are fluent in American Sign Language and sensitive to the cultural experiences and communication needs that concern Deaf people and their families.

Outpatient Services

Some of the outpatient services available for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people and their families include:

  • Psychotherapy services for children, adolescents, adults and families
  • Brief treatment
  • Crisis intervention
  • Group therapy
  • Batterers Intervention Program (probation-certified)
  • Case Management
  • Couples therapy
  • Psychiatric services
    • Medication evaluation
    • Medication monitoring and tracking

A Multidisciplinary Approach

The program employs a multidisciplinary approach, matching clients and their families with a team of experts. Team members may include clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and an educational therapist. The program also encourages collaboration with other providers such as school and vocational staff and consultation with other CFDC professionals.

Information/Referral and Case Management Services

Services provided include advocacy, community education, and linkage to mental health professionals, community agencies, county/state mental health agencies, employment development, courts and probation, Department of Children and Family Services, and schools. Services are provided within the Center, on school sites, and in the greater
community.

Associated Fees and Funding Sources

The cost of services may be met through MediCal, Healthy Families, MediCal/MediCare and private payment. A sliding scale payment plan is available to qualified families.

Funding sources for the Child and Family Development Center include the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Department of Children and Family Services, City of Santa Monica, and private donations.
