The Chan Soon-Shiong Center for Life Sciences has been designed with innovative desk-height nurse stations, allowing patients and their families to easily interact with the nursing staff.
Located at the main entry point of each unit, the desk-height stations are configured with an open-plan design to create a physical environment that is inviting and conducive for consultations and inquiries. The new nursing stations offer an ergonomic and comfortable work environment for nurses and other staff members while they care for their patients.
"Saint John's nurses helped design their environment so that they can work more effectively with doctors, patients and families to meet their needs," says Denise Orthen, Transition Director for Saint John's.
Nursing stations in the Critical Care Unit on the second floor are strategically located between every pair of rooms so nurses can visually monitor their patients at all times through interior windows. Every patient room is equipped with break-away doors that can be removed quickly when seconds count in an emergency.
To further enhance patient care in the Inpatient Pavilion, nurses and key staff members will carry a wireless phone that is fully integrated with the nurse call system. This allows patients to contact their assigned nurse directly with the touch of the nurse call button on their "pillow speaker" or on the wall. Once a patient presses the button, the nurse call system rings the master telephone at the nursing station, and the mobile phone of the nurse assigned to the patient displays the room number or name of the patient needing assistance.
